About the Organisation

The Australian College of Midwives (ACM) is the peak professional body for midwives in Australia. As a national, not for profit organisation, its purpose is to advance midwifery through leadership, education, and connection.

The College represents the professional interests of midwives and supports the profession to enable midwives to work to their full scope of practice, improving health outcomes for women, babies, and families. Providing advocacy, professional development, conferences, publications, and member services, the ACM works closely with governments, health organisations, and stakeholders across Australia.

About the role

The Head of Operations will play a key leadership role at the centre of the organisation’s performance and future direction. This newly created role combines operational leadership with a clear growth mandate, ensuring ACM operates effectively, compliantly and sustainably while supporting its long term impact. Working closely with the CEO and the wider team, you will strengthen ACM’s systems, people capability and financial health, while contributing to thoughtful, missionโ€‘aligned growth.

You will oversee core functions including finance, administration, people, member services and facilities, leading a small, multidisciplinary team to deliver strong operational outcomes and continuous improvement. Responsibilities will include:

Operational leadership
  • Lead ACM’s day to day operations across finance, administration, member services and facilities, ensuring systems, processes and resources are effective, compliant and aligned to organisational priorities.
  • Drive continuous improvement, risk management and governance activity, including infrastructure oversight, board reporting and contribution to strategic planning.
Financial management
  • Oversee budgets, audits and financial reporting, providing clear, timely advice to the CEO and Board to support financial sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory, funding and grant obligations, including procurement and contract management.
Growth and sustainability
  • Partner with the CEO to identify, evaluate and progress growth opportunities aligned to ACM’s mission and strategy.
  • Lead membership growth initiatives and support new or enhanced programs, partnerships and business cases that strengthen sustainability and member value.
People and culture
  • Provide operational HR leadership including recruitment coordination, onboarding, performance processes and workforce planning.
  • Champion a positive, inclusive and collaborative culture, ensuring compliance with employment legislation and WHS requirements.
Why you’ll love it
  • Work in close partnership with an engaged and approachable CEO who values collaboration and fresh thinking.
  • Make a meaningful impact in a purpose-led organisation with a strong focus on improving outcomes and delivering real value to the communities it serves.
  • Access to salary packaging and enhanced superannuation with an additional 2% on top of standard employer rate.
  • Enjoy a flexible hybrid work environment (up to 4 days work from home).
  • Join an organisation that genuinely invests in its people, offering a dedicated professional development budget and opportunities for longโ€‘term growth and progression.
What you’ll bring
  • A proven senior operator with strong experience across operations, finance, and business leadership, bringing sound commercial judgement, governance capability, and financial oversight.
  • Experience in a purposeโ€‘led, notโ€‘forโ€‘profit, professional association, or membership environment, with a track record of improving performance, sustainability, and value.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and deliver growth opportunities through new programs, partnerships, or funding models, with the confidence to think beyond traditional approaches.
  • An effective people leader experienced in developing small, multidisciplinary teams and operating comfortably at both strategic and handsโ€‘on levels, including with Boards and senior stakeholders.
  • Highly organised and selfโ€‘directed, with strong communication skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and a commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance.
  • Genuine alignment with ACM’s mission and values, and motivation to contribute to a purposeโ€‘driven organisation in a sustainable, commercially minded way.
  • Understanding of the health sector and midwifery would be advantageous.
