Communications Manager | Science for Wildlife

Science for Wildlife is a dynamic, science-led not-for-profit dedicated to conserving Australia’s native wildlife and the places we all call home. We create and share scientific knowledge to empower conservation - working hand-in-hand with researchers, land managers and communities to deliver solutions that last.

We’re looking for a Communications Manager who is excited by the challenge of turning science into stories that inspire action, build trust, and grow impact. This is a rare opportunity to take a lead role in shaping how a respected conservation organisation connects with the world.

Why this role is special

This isn’t a narrow, siloed communications job. You’ll be at the heart of the organisation - influencing strategy, collaborating closely with scientists and leadership, and seeing the real-world outcomes of your work. You’ll have the autonomy to bring ideas to life, the flexibility to balance work with life, and the satisfaction of knowing your skills are directly contributing to wildlife conservation.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Leading Science for Wildlife’s communications and marketing strategy, including awareness and fundraising campaigns
  • Crafting powerful stories that translate complex science into engaging, accessible content
  • Building our public profile through media opportunities, partnerships and digital channels
  • Creating and overseeing content across web, social media, campaigns and publications
  • Working directly with ecologists and researchers - including occasional field visits - to capture authentic stories and insights
  • Supporting fundraising and community engagement initiatives through compelling messaging
  • Collaborating with partners, sponsors and stakeholders to deliver shared conservation goals
  • Tracking performance and refining strategies to maximise reach, engagement and impact
  • Providing communications guidance and support across the organisation
About you

You’re a thoughtful, creative and strategic communicator who thrives in purpose-driven work. You love storytelling, care about accuracy and integrity, and are energised by working with people who are passionate about what they do. You’re confident taking the lead, but you’re also collaborative, curious and grounded.

You don’t need to know everything about wildlife science -  but you do need to be excited about learning, asking good questions, and helping important work reach the audiences it deserves.

You’ll bring:
  • A degree in Communications, Media, Marketing, Journalism or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • At least 4 years’ experience in communications, with the confidence to lead strategy and delivery
  • Outstanding writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences
  • Experience managing digital platforms, social media and web content
  • Media relations experience and an understanding of how to generate positive coverage
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities
  • Experience with communications tools such as CMS platforms, social media schedulers, design software (Canva or Adobe), CRM systems and Mailchimp
  • A proactive, organised and flexible approach, with a genuine interest in conservation and community impact
What we offer:
  • Meaningful work - see the real conservation impact of your skills
  • Flexibility - part-time (0.6 FTE) with hybrid working arrangements
  • Autonomy and trust - space to lead, create and innovate
  • Connection to science and nature - collaborate with researchers and visit field sites
  • Supportive, values-driven culture - work with people who care deeply about what they do
  • Opportunity to grow - shape and evolve the communications function as the organisation grows
If you’re ready to use your communications skills to help protect Australia’s wildlife - we’d love to hear from you.
