The 5 Essential Leadership Skills Needed to Motivate and Retain People in Today’s Hybrid Workplace

Employee engagement, healthy productivity levels, staff retention; none of these were easy in the ‘traditional’ workplace setting.

We’ve picked the brains of Beaumont’s own People and Culture Experts to bring you the 5 essential leadership skills needed to motivate and retain people in today’s hybrid workplace.

1. Leading by Example

Lead your people authentically & honestly with purpose, passion and vision to effectively ‘rally the troops’.

Inspire, respect, listen and challenge your people and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.

Improve ideas and brainstorming throughout the company at all levels, by encouraging at times a “boundaryless organisation” to boost innovation, efficiency and growth by removing hierarchy structures and a free flow of information in an ever-changing world.

Top Tip:  Remember actions speak louder than words when strengthening trust and boosting morale within the team.

2. Look After Your People and Yourself

Demonstrate respect, appreciate, and celebrate your employees.

Find out what your people enjoy doing outside the workplace, organise occasional snacks for your people to share, celebrate the human side of your business by celebrating birthdays, accomplishments, retirements and newcomers. Great for morale and connection but it also helps employees to remember to relax and enjoy the time they have when working together.

Most importantly – remember to look after yourself and encourage your team to look after their health and wellbeing too. It makes for a more productive and happier workplace culture.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions survey indicated that 61% of respondents have experienced mental health problems associated with their jobs and working conditions.

3. Enhance Connection in A Hybrid Workplace

Connection enhances motivation.

A recent study by Gartner shows that 48% of employees will likely work remotely post-pandemic. (Source: Gartner Human Resources 2021).

Develop solutions to connect your team whilst maintaining a sense of culture and community across a variety of locations, be it in office, at home, or in another remote location.

Recreate a workplace atmosphere online – remaining physically close online like in the workplace as well as developing a social presence and opportunities for natural interaction. (Think VR & AR solutions). “While the majority of people appreciate the flexibility of remote work, 49% are looking forward to increased opportunities to socialize in their return to the office” according to a  workplace surveyfrom JLL.

Top Tip: Develop creative solutions to encourage connection – virtual workouts, competition days, question of the week, social club (trivia, bingo), online chance encounter opportunities for teams like Roblox.

4. Play to Your Strengths

Energise your people!

Leverage your team’s strengths for peak performance and engagement!

Conduct a SWOT analysis to identify your teams’ attributes and identify areas of opportunity and also where they may need development, additional training or areas where you may need extra support.

Consider a professional tool such as Strengths Profile to find out what your teams’ realised strengths, unrealised strengths (Opportunities), Learned Behaviours (Threats) and Weaknesses are by conducting a Team strength’s profiling session enabling greater awareness of self and colleagues. Find out more about strengths and download sample reports for managers, individuals and teams here

5. Trust Your Team

Give your people ownership of their outcomes.

54% of respondents in Beaumont People’s own Meaningful Work Survey said that ‘trust of managers’ was the most important contributor to attaining Meaningful Work.

In addition, recognise a job well done by incorporating recognition programs. “Recognition creates an emotional connection between employer and employee – a critical piece of employee engagement – and fulfills employees’ basic needs of esteem and belonging within a group.”

It is widely known that people work harder when they know they are appreciated, and research backs this up!

According to a survey, “79% of employees say that recognition makes them work harder and 78% are more productive after being rewarded.”

Reward and recognition programs are key for companies looking to attract and retain younger workers. “In fact, as more Millennials and Generation Z workers enter the workforce, the importance of a reward systems to increase motivation is becoming even greater. Although these workers want fair compensation and benefits, they also want meaningful and fulfilling work.” (Source: Chron)

Top Tip: Demonstrate logic of reasoning by explaining the ‘why’ to your people and challenge your employees to identify the ‘Why’ behind their important tasks to assist them in owning their outcomes. “As Simon Sinek so famously pointed out, the what and the how are easy for most companies to identify. It’s the why that’s hard – and that makes all the difference.”
