The Leadership Series: Leadership Observations From The Front Line

Interviews with Leaders from the For-Purpose sector with Liska Turner

For-Purpose leaders are as diverse as the organisations that they lead. Every couple of months I sit down with a Leader where they share their experiences and thoughts on leading a for-purpose organisation. This month I had the pleasure of talking to Maree McCabe, CEO of Dementia Australia.

Listen to the interview below.

My main take-aways:

  • Culture starts at the top - and that’s the Board. The Board meet in different locations and they invite all our stakeholders to come and meet with the board informally including clients and staff

  • If you are thinking of moving from a federated model to a unified entity, do it. Start with the coalition of the willing and go from there

  • The importance of human skills in succession planning and organisational leadership

  • Maree's best habit is to do the tough things first

  • Her top tips – trust yourself, get a coach, allow yourself to be inspired and be willing to take to some risks

  • And finally, the book she mentions is

Sheeds: A Touch of Cunning by Tom Prior.
