A Start in Life supports young people to overcome barriers to education, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to thrive. As a key member of the fundraising and communications team, you’ll contribute to an organisation with purpose, impact and heart.

As Communications & Marketing Specialist , you’ll shape how they tell the story - creating engaging content, nurturing donor relationships and strengthening their digital presence. You will lead communications planning and delivery across multiple channels to grow awareness, trust and long-term support.

In this pivotal role, you will:
  • Develop and deliver an annual communications plan aligned to fundraising and donor engagement goals
  • Create compelling written and visual content for newsletters, campaigns, social media, donor materials and the annual report
  • Manage digital marketing including social channels, EDMs, website content and online engagement
  • Maintain brand consistency through design templates, style guides and messaging frameworks
  • Produce donor reports, key publications and impact-led storytelling pieces
  • Monitor media trends and opportunities to support timely, strategic organisational responses
  • Coordinate donor events, supporter functions and campaign-related activities
  • Analyse communications and donor engagement data to inform insights, improve targeting and optimise results
  • Lead communications-related projects from concept to delivery, ensuring quality and timeliness
  • Collaborate closely with fundraising, education and data teams to deliver integrated activities and share stories of impact
About You

You’re a creative, driven and purpose-led communicator who knows how to connect audiences with stories that matter. With experience in communications, marketing or donor engagement - ideally within a not-for-profit - you bring both strategic thinking and hands-on execution. You’re confident managing content, digital channels, brand messaging and campaigns, and you thrive in a collaborative environment where your work contributes directly to social impact.

You have:
  • Demonstrated experience in communications, marketing or stakeholder engagement, ideally in the NFP or purpose-driven sector
  • Strong digital marketing skills across social media, EDMs, scheduling tools and analytics
  • Exceptional writing, storytelling and content creation abilities across print and digital formats
  • Experience developing and maintaining brand guidelines, templates and consistent design assets
  • Ability to plan, execute and evaluate communications and donor campaigns
  • CRM and email marketing platform experience (e.g., ThankQ, Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor)
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to balance multiple projects
  • Creative flair, a collaborative mindset and a commitment to supporting young people’s education
  • (Desirable) Experience in fundraising communications, SEO, paid social, or design/animation
